This Santa Claus climbing in from the chimney is a thing of beauty for all Santa lovers who visit the decorated Benoit Square and North Fairhaven Improvement Association building across the street. The old statue had been showing signs of age, and needed some tender-loving-care.
Fiona Marques from Fairhaven High School stepped in and restored the statue this year in time for it to be on display by the door of the building during the annual lighting of Benoit Square in December. Ms. Marques wrote that she repainted and touched up the entire statue. After it was painted, she sealed it with a weather resilient Rustoleum. Ms. Marques is in the art program at FHS, and says she has had “a paintrbrush in my hand ever since I was little.”
She said most of her classes consist of visual arts and a few AP courses. She hopes to get most of her college credits done before she goes to college.
“After graduation, I plan on pursuing art and possibly double majoring in illustration and political science,” wrote Ms. Marques. “Hopefully I can become either a freelance illustrator or even work for the New Yorker.”
