Our guest, Grant O’Rielly, Ph.D., an experimental nuclear physicist and Professor of Physics at UMass-Dartmouth, will discuss The Science of Oppenheimer. The backstory of the movie Oppenheimer was fraught with scientific hurdles & unknowns, as Grant will relate. After the discovery at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Germany in 1938 (at the beginning of WWII) that uranium atoms could be split into lighter particles, known as nuclear fission, the race to make the world’s first atomic bomb was on.
