The National Association of Letter Carriers annual food drive netted 3630 pounds of canned goods and other nonperishable items on Saturday, 5/12, the lowest amount in Fairhaven since the Neighb News started keeping track in 2007.
Gerry Payette, the director of the Shepherd’s Food Pantry in Acushnet, however, kept it all positive. He told volunteers that it was 3640 pounds that they “didn’t have yesterday.”
Last year, Fairhaven residents donated 8,690 pounds, the first time since 2007 that 8,000 was reached.
Letter carriers and volunteers colletected more than 21,000 pounds in the surrounding area (see letter below). Fairhaven donations went to the Shepherd’s Food Pantry, which also has food collection bins at Stop & Shop in Fairhaven and the Millicent Library. To donate, send check or money order to Shepherd’s Food Pantry, 1215 Main St., Acushnet, MA 02743. To learn more visit http:// www.shepherdspantry.org or call 508-763-9289.
