Millions protest across US and world against Trump policies

April 9, 2025 by Staff Writer

By Beth David, Editor

Millions of people demonstrated at peaceful “Hands Off!” rallies in more than 1200 cities across the US and in Europe and Canada on 4/5/25 to protest the Trump administration’s executive overreach and resulting threats to our constitutional form of government, cuts to services, mass firing of government workers, and steep tariffs on countries around the world. There were no reports of arrests anywhere in the US.

In Boston, more than 100,000 protesters gathered at the Boston Common and marched to government center in the rain and cold.

The event started with remarks by Rev. Mariama White-Hammond, Pastor, New Roots AME Church and Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll, at the Common. US Sen. Ed Markey; Jessica Tang, President AFT-MA; Carol Rose, President ACLU-MA; Chastity Bowick, Founder of Trans Resistance, and others spoke at government center, with entertainment by the Dropkick Murphys.

“We are inspired by how many people came out — despite the rain — to say Hands Off, peacefully,” wrote the organizers in a statement. “We are grateful to the people of Boston and all of Massachusetts who showed up to prove that the spirit of America is alive and well — and will never be silenced. This fight is just beginning, and we’re mobilizing to jumpstart the opposition. Together, we have the power to stop this takeover. We urge people to join one of our organizations and keep taking action.”

Boston’s Hands Off! was organized by the Indivisible Mass Coalition, Mass 50501, Swing Blue Alliance, and UU Mass Action, and a large number of co-sponsor organizations representing many diverse groups, causes and communities from across the Commonwealth.
