Since 2004, the history and experiences of area veterans have been showcased at the Fort Taber~ Fort Rodman Military Museum, and Veterans Memorial at Fort Taber Park, 1000C South Rodney French Boulevard, in New Bedford.
In the years since, nearly 2,000 donors have provided artifacts that showcase their military history, or those of a loved one.
From photos to letters from home to awards and medals, these artifacts put a human face on local men and women who transformed overnight from neighbors, friends and colleagues to veterans in brave service to their country.
More than 108,000 people have visited the museum since it opened and floor space has doubled.
The museum is proudly celebrating its 20th anniversary Sept. 21 with an event to feature military re-enactors, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a salute to the American flag. Refreshments will be served.
The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day, with anniversary events to begin at noon. Admission to the museum is always free. Exhibits change frequently, so there is always something new to see and learn about the area’s proud military history.
