The Acushnet Police Department issued a statement on Facebook on 3/7/26 congratulating the new chief.
“It is with the upmost honor, to proudly announce and congratulate Gary S. Coppa on his promotion to Chief of the Acushnet Police Department,” reads he statement. “Chief Coppa brings more than 30 years of dedicated public service to this role.”
The statement notes that Chief Coppa started with the town as a call firefighter, then a part-time police officer in 1996, and a full-time officer in 1999.

“Throughout his career, he has served the community in many important roles including Patrol Officer, Detective, and Firearms Licensing Officer,” reads the statement. “In April 2005, he was promoted to Sergeant, where he continued his leadership as both Patrol Sergeant and Detective Sergeant, earning the respect of his colleagues and the community he serves.
“Chief Coppa is a proud lifelong resident of Acushnet. Chief Coppa understands the community deeply and carries a vision focused on protecting and strengthening the town he calls home. The department looks forward to his leadership, dedication, and continued commitment to serving the people of Acushnet.
“Congratulations Chief Coppa on this well-deserved promotion.”
Chief Coppa was appointed by the Selectboard at their 2/27/26 meeting after interviews with three candidates. He has been serving as Provisional Poilce Chief.
