Approximately 500 people marched against racism in Mattapoisett on Friday, 6/5/20. The group gathered at the Park and Ride on North Street and marched to the gazebo in Mattapoisett Village, where speakers recounted their experiences with racism.

The march and gathering were peaceful, and protestes wore masks and maintained their distance when they go to the gazebo. One sign read: “Mattapoisett is not special. Racism exists here too.”

Marches and protests have taken place throughout the country after the death of George Floyd, a black man who was on his stomach and handcuffed behind his back for nearly nine minutes while a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck on 5/24/20. Mr. Floyd died from asphyxiation. Protests across the country have been mostly peaceful, but some have erupted in riots, looting, and more charges of police brutality.
