Macy Joseph was valuable asset to Police Department

March 16, 2017 by Fairhave Neighborhood News

It was tough to read about the loss of retired police officer Macy Joseph this week. In his obituary he was described in his private life as “a regular Mr. Fix It.”

Well, that portrayal would certainly hold true also to his career on the police department. Mostly behind the scenes, he played a significant role in so many functions within the agency. Macy was an extremely valuable asset to the  department and a person  that all of us would go to when we needed something done.

For many years he was in charge of the ambulance service along with being  our town “safety officer.”

In this latter role “Officer Joseph” was a police icon to so many kids,  long before we had school resource officers. There is likely a generation of adults in town now who can recall only one police officer by name from when they were growing up. That would be Macy Joseph.

Without doubt his family and friends and a lot of old, retired co-workers are going to miss him greatly.

Ted Silva, Fairhaven. Mr. Silva was police chief in Fairhaven from 1993 until 2002
