Trojan Horse is Good Analogy
I offer this letter as a follow-up to the excellent letter by the chair of the League of Women Voters SouthCoast, Eileen Marum, published in the July 30, 2026 issue of Fairhaven Neighborhood News. In that article, the analogy of the “Trojan Horse” from Greek lore was used in exposing the Save America Act as a camouflage for casting doubt on election integrity. It is a blatant attempt to discourage participation in our elections by increasing the difficulty in doing so.
A similar tactic is being waged in assaulting our civil rights programs supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion, often referred to as DEI.
Over the years, various programs have been developed to help those among us who have unmet needs. Such programs have been developed and codified into laws to overcome racial and ethnic inequities, GBTQ and transgender rights, and civil and labor rights. Some recent Executive Orders (EOs) abandon decades of success by our federal and state governments in helping to root out discrimination and equalizing opportunity for underrepresented groups.
As with the mirage created to cast doubt on our fair and secure elections, symbolized by the Trojan Horse analogy, so too we should not be swayed by the castigations showered on many of our federal and state programs successfully designed to offer help to those who are in need.
