Town is at Pivotal Moment
I am writing to convey my enthusiasm and support for several candidates running in this year’s town election.
Recently, we have witnessed a trend where Town officials have been elected to oversee the same industries in which they are employed. Additionally, experienced professionals who once served the Town have been removed, and their positions eliminated. This has resulted in a reliance on last-minute consultations with Town Counsel, often for damage control, which has led to legal fees significantly surpassing the modest salaries of the removed staff.
Essentially, we are spending dimes to save nickels while facing a looming budget deficit. Furthermore, any suggestion for enhanced training requirements for public officials, which would incur little to no cost, is often met with resistance and controversy. This lack of training has contributed to costly litigation, and we have come to accept it as normal for decisions to be made behind closed doors, with information provided to the public in an incomplete or delayed manner.
I believe we are at a pivotal moment for a fundamental reset of our Town government. Collectively, the candidates I support show a genuine commitment to a broad array of social causes. They are well-educated and dedicated to ethical accountability in politics. I feel more optimistic than I have in a long time about the potential direction we may take.
I am proud to endorse Natalie Mello for the Select Board, Miles Grant and Sean Powers for the Planning Board, and Kelly McGowan Ochoa for the School Committee. I would like to thank them for their willingness to enter this race.
Kevin Grant, Fairhaven
Mr. Grant is a member of the Planning Board. He notes: My views are my own and do not represent those of the Planning Board, in addition I am not related to Miles Grant.
