Thank You To Volunteers And Town for Garden
I would like to extend a big thank-you to everyone who has helped with the new Sconticut Neck Native Plant Garden so far!
If you haven’t heard about it, it is a 5,000 sq foot space located in Macomber-Pimental Park (Bernese Street, Fairhaven) that will be exclusively dedicated to growing plants native to our unique region of coastal Massachusetts. This will attract pollinators, increase biodiversity of birds and invertebrates, and make the area more flood resilient.
With some more funding, it will also get an ADA accessible walkway installed to make this special place enjoyable for everyone!
First, I would like to thank the Board of Public Works for their unanimous approval of this project as well as the support of Josh Crabb, Vinnie Furtado and their crew. Next our town Sustainability Coordinator, Kelly Camara, who has been instrumental in applying for grants to fund this project. I would also like to thank my fellow Sustainability Committee members, especially Ann Richard and Wendy Drumm; two landscapers who offered their expertise pro-bono to help with the design and plant selection: Cory Arruda of Southcoast Native Landscapes in New Bedford and Jessica Cook of Quintessential Gardens in Westport; Sean Rogers who provided the huge amount of cardboard used for mulching; Fitzgerald Tree Service who donated enough woodchip mulch to cover the whole area; and all the volunteers who showed up to help on two hot summer mornings: Jim, Karen, Ann, Wendy, Cindy, Chester, Alisa, and Shawn.
This has been a community effort and will create not only a four-season attraction that beautifies our town, but a tremendous environmental benefit to our fragile landscape and its wildlife.
