Letter_Pride Sign is for Always

September 28, 2022 by Staff Writer

Pride Sign is For Always, Not Just June

The Office of Tourism’s rainbow Pride sign was turned around backwards after a town committee [Historical Commission] met in the Visitor’s Center in the Academy Building.

The Historical Commission’s chairperson Wayne Oliveira comments that “it should not be on display in a government office,” and is inappropriate if it appears in a scan of a government meeting!! Gary Lavalette used the “we” reason to defend the Commission’s concern that a “couple of older folks” might be “uncomfortable with it.” Ms. Hahn’s comment that it is a “childish prank’ sis beyond my comprehension, as this is a civil rights issue and should be viewed as such!

The Fairhaven Select Board should step up to the plate and make sure that this never happens again and those who participated publicly apologize to Mr. Richard and the Town of Fairhaven, as the sign is not just for the month of June, it is for always.
