The Power of the Press
One of Mark Twain’s best pieces of advice was “Never argue with a man who buys ink by the barrel” — his testimony to the power of the press.
When people criticize Beth David’s reporting, they’re forgetting a crucial fact: She’s not just a reporter; she owns the paper. Just as Rupert Murdoch owns the Wall Street Journal and can print whatever news and opinion he wishes, Ms. David owns the Fairhaven Neighborhood News and can print what she likes. You may not agree with her choices, but she has every right to make them. She allows others to express their opinion in letters, although she has no obligation to do so.
As for the town’s printing notices in the FNN, it’s the cheapest and most efficient way to reach the largest number of Fairhaven residents. No-brainer.
Another good piece of advice to Ms. David’s critics is the “front page test”: Never do anything that you wouldn’t want to see on the front page of the Fairhaven Neighborhood News.
