Meals Program Provides Vital Service
Coastline Elderly, a non-profit organization, provided a significant number of meals in 2022, serving a total of 434,000 meals in seven South Coast communities. The distribution of meals included 289,000 in New Bedford, 56,000 in Dartmouth, 41,000 in Fairhaven, 29,000 in Acushnet, and 19,000 in Marion, Mattapoisett, and Rochester.
These numbers highlight the crucial role played by supportive programs like Coastline Elderly in meeting the needs of the community. However, the need for funding for such programs has become more urgent than ever. Many non-profits with similar missions are also facing financial challenges. It is important to recognize that the allocation of funds follows a trickle-down pattern from the federal to state to municipality levels, ultimately impacting us all.
Unfortunately, the priority of spending to meet basic needs and provide support often takes a backseat to personal financial concerns. If we genuinely care about people, particularly those from low-income backgrounds, it is vital to support candidates and legislators who prioritize funding for these programs. While the amounts required for such initiatives may be relatively low in the context of government spending, they are often subject to undue criticism. This criticism unfairly targets those who are unable to advocate for themselves.
During the Override vote in Fairhaven, there was frequent mention of the “low-income senior/ family” population. Now is the time for individuals to back their words with action and actively advocate for these people. This advocacy should extend beyond sporadic efforts and instead focus on consistent support and the enactment of legislation aimed at addressing their needs. A small contribution of $10 can make a significant impact, providing five hot meals to someone in need within our area. This figure becomes even more relevant when considering that 41,000 meals were required in Fairhaven alone last year.
