Letters Offer No Guide
Months of FNN letters and candidates’ statements on the April 7 local elections provided no guide to voting.
“enthusiastic approach to community engagement….strong collaborative leadership style…. meaningful difference in the community…. humility, humanity…work for the greater good….collaborative leadership style”
These glittering generalities, these floating abstractions, are as empty as Trump’s “beautiful” tariffs with benefits in an unknowable future. Or Leftist fantasies of equality. Or eternal life with God. They are not guides to life in concrete reality.
“deep commitment to responsible governance….meaningful difference in the community….humility, humanity… greater good….vision for sustaining Fairhaven as a vibrant community….clear decision-making…. cohesive cooperation”
These are mystical or subjective ideals of the unfocused mind with no definite meaning. There is no mind at work, focused, thru the senses, onto concrete reality. You wouldn’t hire a car mechanic, doctor or carpenter like this. It’s emotion-guided, political power for the purpose of power. Unlimited majority rule. Mob rule. Lynch mob. Democracy.
“dedicated and passionate individual who has consistently demonstrated her commitment to our community….smart, responsible [anti- growth] growth….leadership, vision, and dedication….deep connection to this community….dedicated and insightful…. passion for public education”
[What about parents who reject the educational values of election winners? Who is “the public?” It’s not you.]Where is America’s founding morality of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Where is the politics of the RIGHT to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Where is an ideology of individual rights? Candidates who discuss Fairhaven’s money problems don’t limit government to the protection of individual rights. Unlimited majority rule needs unlimited political power and unlimited spending.
Pragmatism is arbitrary, short-range, pseudo-practicality, like an addict seeking drugs instead of focusing his mind on his life as a whole. We are drifting to the future. Practicality needs absolute, long-range goals. Ideology unifies the mind, unifies action, unifies man’s life.
Stephen Grossman, Fairhaven
