Letter_ Override Essential to Maintain Services

May 31, 2023 by Staff Writer

Override Essential to Maintain Services

Citizens of Fairhaven, MA, should strongly consider supporting the override of Proposition 2 & 1/2 for two crucial reasons. Firstly, the override is essential to maintain our current programs and services. Without it, valuable initiatives such as the Family Center, Unified Sports, and free after-school programming would face severe cuts or even elimination. These programs play a vital role in the well-being and development of our community, providing essential resources and opportunities for our citizens, particularly our youth. By supporting the override, we ensure that these programs continue to thrive and positively impact the lives of Fairhaven residents.

Secondly, the override is necessary to support our dedicated municipal government employees and guarantee funding for crucial positions, such as the newly hired fire fighters, beyond 2024. These individuals work tirelessly on behalf of our town, ensuring our safety, maintaining infrastructure, and providing essential services. Without the override, we risk compromising their ability to perform their duties effectively and maintain the high standard of public service we expect. By approving the override, we demonstrate our appreciation for their hard work and dedication, while also securing their continued employment and ensuring the long-term stability of our municipal government.

While it’s true that upcoming studies may shed light on potential funding needs, we must not overlook the urgency of the present situation. The override addresses the immediate financial challenges that would otherwise result in the loss of crucial programs and services. By acting now, we can safeguard the well-being of our community, support our municipal employees, and lay the foundation for a prosperous and sustainable future for Fairhaven.

Chris Fidalgo, Fairhaven
