The Job Will Simply Not Get Done
Those who voted against the override, when asked about the loss of the economic development office, like to say, “Oh, volunteers will do that.”
Two problems: First, they’re ignoring and devaluing the professionalism, expertise, and connections that Alyssa Botelho brought to the job.
Second, no one is saying, “Oh, I’ll volunteer to do that.”
They just figure someone else will do it. But every organization in town is losing membership and is desperate for volunteers. Those of us who volunteer regularly are overcommitted already. So, no. Volunteers will not do that job. It simply won’t get done.
