In today’s political world the essence of mutual respect is lost. I had my first fundraiser as a new candidate at the Black Whale. I was so very proud of the attendance and support generated during this wonderful evening.
Then within a day after posting my photos of this open invitation event, I received texts and emails of pure dysfunctional hatred.
The issue: Sheriff Thomas Hodgson attended my fundraiser with many other police officers.
I was also surprised when the Sheriff arrived at my fundraiser. I had over 300 guests for my kickoff event. When I welcomed the Sheriff, the conversation was basically, Rick I am reaching across the aisle in the event you win this election.
In today’s sad world of dysfunctional division in this country, I believe that is an admirable approach. The Sheriff was with many of the police officers who attended my event because of my unwavering commitment to the full funding of our Police departments. I believe we must provide the necessary funding to allow our police to work in harmony with our communities. We have so many serious issues that our police are confronted with daily: gun violence, domestic abuse, mental illness, drug overdoses, gangs, etc. Our police need to be proactive so they can be the true agents of peacekeeping in our society.
So, if elected, I will reach across any aisle to offer constructive ideas vs the continuing rhetoric which only deepens the divide in our Country. We need solutions, not more division between Americans.
Regarding prisons, a key issue for me is ending the tragic rise in recidivism. When a young man or woman first enters the prison for whatever crime, we the people have failed that individual. Starting with their family, educators, and political leaders. How do we end this cycle of jail incarceration? I believe education is a key foundation to train these men and women so that they can have a productive life in society. Counseling, treating these individuals with mutual respect, we must be doing everything possible to make their time in jail a time for healing and education
I had the opportunity to meet with the United Front Child development in New Bedford. The Director shared with tears streaming down her face how they have saved the lives of 28 inner city kids. They mentored, provided counseling, and education to help these lost souls regain the opportunity to share equally in our American dream.
I will propose to whomever is the next Sheriff if elected, this organization as a true example for prison reform.
I am truly so enthused to be able to become the catalyst for creating a new can-do spirit for the 10th Bristol. I will be respectful of everyone’s ideas, values, in hope of ending this horrific divide in our Country. We must be able to work as Americans first to build a future for our Country. It starts with a willingness to sit down and talk to those we might not agree with.
Rick Trapilo, Fairhaven, Democratic Candidate for State Representative, 10th Bristol District
