Leave things better than they were
This week felt like I was caught watching one of those Gerard Butler Olympus/London/Etc is Burning movies. Americans decided that because they didn’t get the election result they wanted, that they would attack the government in the most epic temper tantrum ever. In the fashion we have seen time and time again via our political leaders the response has been to point to something else: “Well when Antifa did it the media…” How is that relevant?
When most of us were children we learned early on that method doesn’t work. When we tried it the response was “If (insert name here) jumped off of the Brooklyn Bridge, would you jump too”.
That’s when our parents were trying to teach us to own our mistakes; own our flaws; own our actions. It doesn’t matter what everybody else does. We are responsible for our own actions.
A few months ago during a bickering session….sorry I mean a Select Board meeting, one Select board member made a request to discuss a particular matter. That request was met with another member going on a rant about how his requests were shot down in previous years so he was going to take up everybody’s time by revisiting all of the issues he ever wanted to discuss.
Is this where we are? Forget what the people want. Forget what’s right, or noble, or professional, or mature. Let’s just make this what I want because I carry the gavel.
Our Washington leadership has provided the justification to those who want to draw a line in the sand and no matter how reasonable the request, to never cross that line. If one side said trees will save the ozone layer, the other side proposes we cut down every tree in the country, unless they build that wall (this is hyperbole fyi).
I wasn’t born and raised in Fairhaven. I don’t have any personal issues I’m looking to take up. I am here for one reason. I love this town.
I attended both retirements (see pages 12 and 19) and when asked by anybody my answer was consistent. I was taught to leave things better than they were when you got them. It’s that simple.
