Fairhaven Historical Society – A Force for good.
I wish to acknowledge the wonderful talk the Fairhaven Historical Society arranged for the benefit and enjoyment of everyone.*
The speaker, Charles Slack was superb. His book, “Hetty: The Genius and Madness of America’s First Female Tycoon,” was received by an enthusiastic and eager audience. The Town Hall auditorium was filled to the rafters with an audience that became more captivated and amused as Mr. Slack spoke.
Thank you to everyone who made this event happen, especially Mark Badwey for his esprit de corps in pursuing Mr. Slack and bringing him to Fairhaven. Likewise, Enrique “Ricky” Goytizolo for marshaling his extensive Rolodex to drive attendance and for his steady hand in ensuring a successful event.
Not only did we learn a lot about the life and times of Hetty Green, we also learned about the here and now. Namely, that the efforts of a committed group like the FHS can make a big difference in dispelling division and bringing the community together. A cohesion where everyone can agree that we have more in common than what divides us. There is power in gathering and enjoying shared experiences. It is a force for good and should not be underestimated.
Now, what’s planned for an encore?
