Letter Durants Quiet Leadership Speaks Volumes

March 23, 2022 by Staff Writer

Durant’s Quiet Leadership Speaks Volumes

I write in support of Cameron Durant for Select Board. He may not be the loudest or most braggadocios at self-promotion but behind his calm demeanor he is extensively capable, immensely qualified, and a strong advocate for the betterment of Fairhaven. His quiet leadership speaks volumes, and he has demonstrated that he is worthy of your vote. Here’s why:

Mr. Durant’s professional background in Human Resources (certified by SHRM — the Society of Human Resources Management) is a great advantage in contributing people skills and diffusing situations before they escalate. For example, as a dedicated Board Member at the Board of Public Works for the last 5 years he navigated hot button issues with calm equanimity and undeniable reasonableness. This was no piece of cake as tempers are known to flare and his respectful approach both toward those that came before the board and within the board itself was masterful. It is this ability where his outreach and engagement skills could go a long way in helping unify Fairhaven.

Promoting civility and telegraphing understanding is critical for Fairhaven to wisely utilize all its resources — people, places, and finances. Proactively building consensus while managing multi million-dollar operating budgets and capital projects, as Mr. Durant has done at the BPW, requires vision and communication skills which he has exemplified.

Moreover, he has identified and analyzed numerous areas of improvement in Fairhaven and is strongly advocating for them. For example, adding a social worker to assist the police department in dealing with disturbances where the police are perhaps stretched thin or not trained in mental health issues; adding a head count to the fire departments; and ensuring that the proposed Public Safety Facility site, adjacent to the land fill, complies with DEP’s safety regulations.

The above qualifications coupled with the Mr. Durant’s independent character and leadership style promoting respect and civility, should be modeled, and reinforced throughout Fairhaven.

Mr. Durant is not a showboat — he is the Real Deal: solid, sincere, and sensible — attributes we want in a leader.

It is my belief that Mr. Durant’s addition to the Select Board will improve the quality of life in Fairhaven; help unify the various departments in town; and advance positive progress we all want in Fairhaven.

Cathy Delano, Fairhaven
