State Representatives Steve Ouellette and Mark Sylvia visited the weed remediation project, while in action, at the Lake Street Recreation Area in Acushnet on Friday, 8/8/25 to see first hand how the project is progressing.
Representatives from the Acushnet Conservation Commission and New Bedford Conservation Department attended, as well as the project lead for the eco-harvesting contractor.
Scott Daggett, the lead on the project and Chair of the Lake Street Committee, educated officials on the project, how long it has been in the works, the timeline of the water quality tests, and how the reservoir came to its state with weed overgrowth.
It was highly educational for several of the parties, and all who attended are excited to see the improvements happening and will work to see what can be done to help keep this initiative moving forward.
All three ponds have invasive weeds and overgrowth that have compromised water quality. The Town of Acushnet invested $100,000 for the project.
The project was a bit complicated, as the water is controlled by the City of New Bedford, but the land is in Acushnet. It took some coordination, but the agreements finally were made. Phase one should be finished in about 3 weeks.
After phase one, the weed control will have to be maintained regularly or the problem will return in as little as five years.
