The Fairhaven Recreation Center teamed up with the Millicent Library to give the participants in the Kool Kids program chance to get creative. The whole gang, with a few of their adults in tow, created a cardboard city in the Millicent Library’s auditorium.
Youth Services Librarian, Allie Thiel, Head of Youth Services and Community Engagement, said they have been collecting cardboard from everywhere for weeks.
They placed a cardboard base on the floor, added a blue space for a lake, and a green spot for a park. The rest is up to the kids.
Kellan was creating a sports training facility for basketball, football, and other sports. Meanwhile, his co-creater, Cullen, was building a bridge over the lake to get to the facility.
In another part of town, Major and Grace were working on a skyscraper. They were not sure if it would have businesses or residences, but it could have both.
Noelle was working on a construction site, complete with fence to keep out kids and others.
Charli was building a cat cafe.
“Because I love cats,” she said.
Her dad, Brad, added that they go to a cat cafe in Rhode Island.
“You get lunch and pet cats at the same time,” he said.
Sophia and Meena were making a fountain library, a library with a fountain on the roof.
Wyatt decided the city needed a police station; and Omari made planes that he kept flying around, although we never did locate the airport.
Rylan decided the city needed a beach, so he added one in the corner and put a sushi place there, although he said he never ate sushi.
Michael and Aiden created a farm, with a big barn.
“Because we love animals,” said Michael.
And right next door, Dominic was making a crane that could be used at the farm or anywhere in the city, which was clearly experiencing a construction boom.
Julian was busy making a space station with a parking garage, and a rocket ship to go on the roof.
Chloe and Saige decided no city was complete without a jungle somewhere in there.
Others were making smaller items to help complete details of the city.
Students from Fairhaven High School helped with the project, and some parents and grandparents joined in the fun, too.
All in all it was a fun buzz of activity for a very cold February day.
