The Fairhaven Kids Fest packed in some great fun on Saturday, 10/8, with lots of activities on the lawns of Fairhaven High School and the Visitors Center.
Activities included pumpkin painting, a costume contest, and lots of hands on activities at the various vendor booths. A little sprinkle of rain in the morning did not dampen spirits or slow down the activities.
The turnout was “fabulous,” said Chris Richard, Director of the Office of Tourism, which sponsored the event with Millicent Library Youth Services
New this year was a calming tent, an area for children who may get overexcited and need a place for some quiet play. Right next door was a changing table nursing tent. Both were staffed by the Belonging Committee. Jessica Fidalgo said about 100 children used the tend.
“A lot of the parents were grateful,” said Ms. Fidalgo.
The changing table/nursing tent got used, too. She could tell, she said, because there were dirty diapers in the trash.
“I’ve never been so excited about dirty diapers,” said Ms. Fidalgo.
“I’m very excited about it,” she said, adding that people asked if they would be at other events in town.
They plan on being at as many event as they can, but will also lend the tent to groups organizing events.
The Halloween Swap also went well, with the Sustainability Committee giving away hundreds of gently used Halloween costumes. Ann Richard said they gave away about 500 costumes.
Roaming the grounds were a variety of characters from film and fable. Ezekiel the Green with his trusty dragon Balthazar was there. A stilt walker scarecrow roamed the grounds with pirates and a host of spooky ghouls who took part in the costume contest.
Three judges chose winners for Funniest, Scariest, Most Fabulous, and Most Heroic in four age groups: 3 and under, 4–7. 8–11, 12+.
Bradley Wakefield of East Taunton won Funniest in the 4–7 age group for his home made costume of Marshmallow the Enchanted Snow Monster from “Frozen.”
He and his mother Kristen made the costume themselves, spending many hours cutting foam and painting it.
“I feel good,” said Bradley. “There were a lot of measurements.”
