The recently appointed Junior Tree Wardens of Fairhaven celebrated their first Arbor Day by planting an oak tree at the Wood School on Friday 4/26/24, after school, specifically, a quercus macrocarpa, aka a Bur Oak.
Fairhaven Tree Warden, Don Collasius, directed the youngsters as they filled in the dirt around the tree, spread mulch, and helped with all other associated tasks. They learned how deep the hole needed to be, how to spread the dirt and get the air pockets out, and how to tie up the tree so it will not topple over while it is still young and newly planted.
They helped build a berm around it to hold in the water, and spread mulch. The also learned the tree will need to be watered regularly for the first three years, requiring about five gallons of water every five days.
Fairhaven Community TV was on hand to record the event, and some of the Junior Tree Wardens spoke to the camera to explain why they were participating.
Sam said we need to take care of trees or there would be none left. Trees are very good for the environment. Without them, we would have less oxygen an less shade.
Lena trees help the planet and they create oxygen.
“I love the world,” said Lena. “Trees are good for the planet.”
Oh, and she likes to climb trees, too.
Mr. Collasius also planted an oak and a maple tree at Fairhaven High School with FHS students. Both events will be available at www.FairhavenTV.com on the Fairhaven Community Media page.
