New Bedford to Hold July 4 Fireworks
The City of New Bedford’s Independence Day fireworks display will be staged from a barge located off the State Pier in New Bedford Harbor, beginning at 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4th.
Lower Union Street (between N. Water St. and Route 18) will be closed to vehicle traffic and will be one of the best spots in downtown New Bedford to view the fireworks display.
Downtown New Bedford is home to destination attractions such as the New Bedford Whaling Museum, New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, New Bedford Art Museum, and the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center.
“We’re excited about this year’s July 4th celebration,” said Mayor Jon Mitchell. “We invite residents and visitors to spend time downtown ahead of the evening’s fireworks display and explore all that the City has to offer.”
The rain date will be Wednesday, July 5th.

Cape Verdean Recognition Parade
The 51st annual Cape Verdean Recognition Parade will be on Sat., 7/1, at 11 a.m. Route: Starts at Buttonwood Park, east on Union St., then south onto Acushnet Ave., west onto Grinnell St., north onto Purchase St., ending at the Cape Verdeans Veterans Hall.
Vendors will be on Bedford Street between Acushnet Avenue and Purchase Street.
Car Cruise, Parade, Independene Day Ceremony
Fourth of July activities in Fairhaven are set for the morning of Tuesday, July 4th, beginning with the raising of the “Big Flag” in front of Fairhaven High School, 12 Huttleston Avenue, at 8:30 a.m.
Following the flag raising, the July 4th Antique and Classic Car Cruise will depart from the high school and follow a route through town that will end up traveling south on Green Street toward Fort Phoenix. On Green Street alongside Cushman Park participants for the 4th of July Parade will be assembled, awaiting the arrival of the car cruise.
The parade will step off at approximately 9:00 a.m., led by Parade Grand Marshall Charles Cromwell, who, as a member of the Tourism Committee, was the chief organizer of the parade for many years and who also served as the first commander of the Fairhaven Village Militia. Marching groups, floats, and vehicles will participate in the parade to Fort Phoenix.
Among those in the parade will be members of the Select Board, the Fairhaven Village Militia, Southcoast Young Marines, Miss New Bedford Tori Kalisz, Fairhaven Acushnet Youth Athletics, Fairhaven Fire Department, and Whaling City Rowing Club with a boat and singing sea shanties. The Fairhaven Council on Aging van will provide transportation for Veterans who wish to take part.
When everyone has arrived at the fort, the Fort Phoenix Independence Day Ceremony will begin at approximately 10:00 a.m. This patriotic program will celebrate the founding of our nation with a short presentation, including a brief history of Fort Phoenix given by Tourism Director Chris Richard. There will be a reading of the Declaration of Independence by Leon Correy, Chair of the Select Board. The flag will be raised by John Medeiros as the National Anthem is sung by Fairhaven High School student Lexi Davignon. Throughout the ceremony there will be musical performances coordinated by the Shepherd Center for the Performing Arts.
Following the flag raising, a gun salute will be fired over the harbor by the Fairhaven Village Militia, Inc., Wayne Oliveira commander.
The July Fourth activities are sponsored by the Fairhaven Office of Tourism and the Fairhaven Historical Commission, with the Fairhaven Village Militia, Inc. The car cruise is organized by John Medeiros. Additional support is provided by the Fairhaven Police Department, Fair-haven Lions Club, and the Shepherd Center for the Performing Arts.
