Friends, family, officials, and members of the public turned out to wish Acushnet’s Gerard “Jerry” Bergeron a happy retirement on at the Acushnet Senior Center on 12/6/22. When he leaves his post at the Emergency Management Agency in January, he will have served 51 years. He has also served in the fire department/EMS, and on the school committee.
State representative Paul Schmid, who represents part of Acushnet along with Bill Straus, presented a citation to Mr. Bergeron from the Mass. House of Representative.
Mr. Schmid said that he is new to Acushnet, but not to public service. He said he has lived in Westport for 60 years.
“And in Westport, when we find a person like Jerry Bergeron, we feel very thankful,” he said.
Selectboard chairperson David Wojnar said he ran against Jerry for School Committee in 1992, and also served with him.
“It is a great honor to be here celebrating Jerry’s career,” said Mr. Wojnar.
He said Mr. Bergeron took him under his wing back then, gave him advice and gave him incentive.
“But he did it in a way that allowed me to get the best experience on that board,” said Mr. Wojnar. “So Jerry, thank you for that. Over the years it’s been great working with you and watching you serve the town.”
Mr. Schmid read the citation, which reads in part: “The entire membership extends its very best wishes and expresses the hope for future good fortune and continued success in all endeavors.”
