On Monday evening, May 20, at 6:30 p.m., Dr. Lisa Maya Knauer will present “Bearing Witness: Ethnographic Insights on the ‘Immigration Crisis’” in the auditorium of the Millicent Library, 45 Center Street, Fairhaven.
Dr. Knauer, chairperson of the Sociology and Anthropology Department at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, will talk about Central American migration to the United States, drawing upon her research with the immigrant community in New Bedford and in Guatemala, her experiences volunteering at the U.S.–Mexico border, and her work as an expert witness in asylum cases.
Dr. Knauer has been researching and collaborating with New Bedford’s Central American community and in Guatemala since 2009. She spent 2011 in Guatemala as a Fulbright scholar, and has been awarded research funding by the Russell Sage Foundation and the Sociological Initiatives Fund.
Her talk is presented by the Friends of the Millicent Library. We invite you to share your family’s immigration story by pinning a card onto our bulletin board, to the right of the Walnut Street entrance.
