Hoppy’s Landing in Fairhaven is getting spruced up for the warm weather. The Harbormaster’s department, Marine Resources Committee and the Board of Public Works have teamed up to make some changes that will make the idyllic spot a little more welcoming to families of all ages. After securing the permission from the Conservation Commission, crews removed some longstanding debris and a lot of invasive vegetation that was blocking the view.
The Harbormaster’s office and BPW also installed large posts that will be connected with rope in nautical style. And on Tuesday, seven picnic tables got delivered so the public will be able to sit and watch the activity at the boat ramp, which is used by a variety of commercial and recreational boats of all sizes.
The picnic tables were built by and donated free of charge by Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational-Technical High School students as part of a community service project. The project will also include park benches and a shade area.
Fairhaven Harbormaster Tim Cox said his daughter Tara Cox and her friend Lexi Lees spearheaded the project as part of a statewide Skills USA competition, and took third place.
Picnic tables were also donated to New Bedford at Fort Taber/Fort Rodman, and in Dartmouth at the YMCA.
Mr. Cox said the students secured a $25,000 grant from Lowe’s for the project, and Big Wheels donated delivery service.
The area at Hoppy’s where the picnic tables are will be seeded with native grasses.
Hoppy’s Landing is located at 69 Goulart Memorial Drive, just before the causeway to West Island. For more information, visit http://fairhaventours.com/hoppys-landing/ or http://www.savebuzzardsbay.org/places-to-go/hoppys-landing/
And while we were there
When you’re hanging out at the boat ramp, you’ll see all sorts of stuff, not just what you’re there for. While we waited for the picnic tables on Tuesday, 5/9, we spotted a few other people, like Captain Bobby “Sacky” Sakwa and Captain Ray Cote. Capt. Sakwa returned from a morning out lobstering, while Capt. Cote headed out, just around the same time. We also saw…
