Hetty Green’s children were as different as night and day. He, Ned, affable, popular, anotehr generation family of financial leaders. She, Sylvia, was a private, shy introvert who always avoided crowds and the limelight, preferring the quiet and calm of nature.
Colone Ned Green, well known in Padanaram where is $1,500,000 mansion is located, is noted fro his varied spendthrift life style, like his father, Edward Green, believing that money was there to use. Gaining his fame as a railroad trailblazer, ned also left an impressive record of funding scientific research, and numerous eccentricity projects and hobbies.
Syvia Green Wilks, much like her mother but not as focused on money, spent her time enjoying her home and gardens. Occasionally, she could be seen escaping the city at her Connecticut mansion, attending the opera and enjoying vacations in Newport or Bar Harbor with her husband, Matthew. In later life, Sylvia, then a widower, enjoyed her Lincoln car, always driven by her chaffeur.
The New Bedford Whaling Historical National Park, 33 William Street, New Bedford, continues its summer series of presentations of the city’s native, Hetty Green. the last monthly Sunday in July, the topic will focus on Hetty’s children, Ned and Sylvia.
Three presentations are scheduled: July 30, Bro and Sis; August 27, “Where is Hetty’s Money Now?”; and Sept. 26, Hetty Trivia, when audience members may win famous Hetty nickels. All programs are held at 1 p.m., and free admission.
