On Sun., 9/24, Hetty Green fans will have the chance to make some $$$! The richest woman in America, a century ago, she believed people should work for money, not beg for alms. Now it’s time for “Hetty Trivia.” Here’s your chance.
When the Green family lived in Bellows Falls, VT, Hetty made a habit of giving a nickel in a piggie bank on each child’s birthday to teach to be frugal and save. And he son, Colonel Ned Green, always kept a pocket of nickels to toss to groups of neighborhood youngsters. The New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, 33 Williams St., NB, will (almost) continue this tradition, on Sun., 9/24, at 1 p.m.
Each May to September, Mrs. Green escapes from the heat and humidity of Wall Street to come to Bedford Village for the cool breezes and brawny ocean essence. Her visits include a monthliy talk sharing her life as a wizard (not a witch).
All are welcome to join “Hetty Trivia” and, of course, win a nickel, at 1 p.m., with free admission when Dr. Irene Gutierrez, 26-year National Park volunteer and Hetty interpreter, will wrap up Hetty’s annual visit.
