Fairhaven’s sixth annual Harvest Fun Day continued under the threat of rainy skies, and through some morning drizzles on Saturday, 10/13/18. More than 70 booths were scheduled to set up, although a few decided not to show up because of the rain.
Most of them, however, took the chance. Most vendors said it was worth the chance, although they admitted that the foot traffic was down. The sun did make an appearance with just about an hour to go.
The Fairhaven Rotary, which was selling kale soup and clam chowder, was by far the most successful. The cold, rainy weather made hot soup a natural sell. They restocked twice, and sold out.
Silly Bean Coffee, however, which was offering cold-brew coffee, did not fare as well.
The activity booths mostly did well, though, except for the bounce house that was supposed to raise funds for the Fairhaven Villiago Militia. It was too wet inside, said Commander Ellie Sylvaria.
Inside the Academy Building, in the old school room, children made their own shell art, while keeping out of the weather.
Kori and Ella said their favorite activity of the day was making their shell art, and getting to dress up in old-time costumes inside the old schoolhouse.
“This is the best part about living in Fairhaven,” said Mara, the adult in the group. She said they also take advantage of the Monday morning activities in the summer that are also free.
Fairhaven Tourism Director Christopher Richard said he was pretty happy with the turnout, considering the threat of rain.
“It was not as showery as last year,” remembered Mr. Richard, noting that some vendors opted out, but the Rotary Club sold out of their hot soup. “So, it has been a good day.”
He said many of the vendors knew each other from the Huttleston Marketplace, which was new this year.
“It’s such a great group,” said Mr. Richard. “They’re so friendly with each other.”
