Fairhaven Board of Health member Heidi Hacking has resigned her position due to health reasons.
In a video posted on Facebook, Ms. Hacking told voters that she has been diagnosed with a glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor. She said she will be undergoing treatment of a palliative nature including radiation and chemo.
“So at this time I feel it’s in my best interest and the town’s best tinterest for me to step down so that the position can be filled,” said Ms. Hacking on the video. “I’m hoping that people will step up and participate in the process.”
Ms. Hacking said the BOH is an active and supportive board and an important one to belong to. She said she is leaving it in “very capable hands” with current staff and board members.
“I believe we have brought a level of civility to the board that was our goal,” said Ms. Hacking. “People in Fairhaven should feel confident in their Board of health.”
Ms. Hacking has undergone surgery to remove most of the tumor, and is undergoing other treatments to slow its growth.
Her BOH Facebook page is still active and supporters may use that to reach out to her at https://www.facebook.com/HeidihackingforFairhavenBoardofHealth
Ms. Hacking won her seat in a huge upset last year, when she beat long time incumbent Peter DeTerra in the 4/4/22 election 1725 to 822.
In the video, Ms. Hacking said she is very proud to serve the town and thanked everyone who voted for her. She said her campaign crew was “awesome,” and it was a great experience to knock on doors and meet residents.
