Green Lanterns garden group is sprucing up Fairhaven

August 13, 2025 by Staff Writer

Press Release

The Green Lanterns are partnering with Mike Jenney, Veterans’ Services Officer for the Town of Fairhaven, to initiate a multi-phase project to enhance the landscaping of Veterans Memorial Park on Huttleston Avenue between Main and Middle Streets.

Over the past months, this newly-formed group has set their sights on various locations around Fairhaven, including the Phoenix Bike Trail, the Civil War Park, and Macomber & Pimentel Park, trimming plant beds and adding colorful perennials to highlight the beauty of the town. The Veterans Park is the latest site to benefit from the Lanterns’ green up efforts.

The plants and materials used for the projects are largely contributed by Fairhaven neighbors and organizations, and the Lanterns are made up of volunteers of all ages, skill sets and horticultural expertise. The team welcomes all — even those with zero gardening experience at all besides a trowel, a sun hat and enthusiasm for improving our public spaces. Members consist of both recent transplants and people who have lived in Fairhaven for their entire lives.

“The interest and support we’ve received around town has been incredible, from helping with watering and plant donations to people just passing by saying thank you,” said one volunteer, Colleen Brewer. “It’s also had the ripple effect of uniting everyone in our common love for Fairhaven.”

Work is already underway at the Veterans Memorial Park, where Fairhaven was commemorated four years ago as a Purple Heart Town, a designation to honor those who have been wounded or killed in combat in service to the country. The Lanterns’ mission for this project is simple: to honor those who served in advance of Veterans Day — and all year round — by refreshing these hallowed grounds that residents and visitors pass by every day.

Volunteer Opportunity

On Saturday, September 6th at 9 a.m., a community work day will take place where additional volunteers are invited to join and help with cleanup and weeding, no signup required — bring a rake, a shovel, or a trash bag. Additional service days will be scheduled as needed until the mission is complete.
