Government and Business are Not the Same
Some folks like to think business experience is relevant to government. That’s because they haven’t worked in government. I have, and so has my wife on a much higher level. Business and government have one thing in common. Money. In business you try and get a bunch of it and hopefully keep a lot. In government you get a bunch through taxes, and get rid of most of it, or else you’re taxing too much.
People talk about efficiency and how important it is in government. That would be great except for the favors and cronyism, that happens a lot, and right here too. I’ll share some that I learned about during my three year tenure as your tree warden in the near future. You’ll shake your head and wonder how it could be.
My personal opinion about qualifications in regards to any political candidate is that first and foremost they listen. When you have a meeting with someone and they tell you “go ahead, I’m just going to write a memo while you talk about your important issue”, it aint gonna work out well for your cause.
When you call a board member and they hang up on you, yah for real, it shows immature behavior and you wonder how that person got elected. When you reach out to a board chair numerous times and they refuse to try and talk things out, how’s that supposed to be good government?
This town needs real listeners and thinkers. Not slick Willes who are all about doing favors for friends, but do things that should be done to make the town better for everyone.
Ask yourself before you fill out your ballot. Who really cares about everyone in this town. Who will be fair and listen attentively about what you care about.
Don C. Collasius, Fairhaven
Mr. Collasisus is the last elected Tree Warden, which is now an appointed position.
