The Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical School District announced the receipt of a $11,000 grant from the U.S. Lacrosse League. The 2020 First Stick Lacrosse grant provides the district’s lacrosse team with equipment from industry leaders including STX, Warrior, Brine and Cascade. Twenty students also receive complimentary memberships to the U.S. Lacrosse organization.
In addition to supporting the current boys and girls lacrosse teams, the district has plans to expand their lacrosse program into community teams and a summer camp for area youth. The equipment will assist the district in providing access to equipment for students who are interested in trying the sport, having fun and learning new skills.
US Lacrosse is dedicated to assisting community organizations that are interested in adding lacrosse to their offerings for youth. Through the First Stick program, awarded organizations receive free lacrosse equipment so they can provide affordable and accessible youth lacrosse activities to their participants.
“Lacrosse is a growing and popular sport in our district,” said Varsity coach Justyn Walker, who is a Voc-Tech graduate and played college lacrosse. “We had more than 50 students play on the boys’ teams last year, and we anticipate close to one hundred interested students this year. With this grant we can ensure access to safe equipment and help more students participate.”
“We are always looking for initiatives to support our students on the field in addition to in their academic classrooms and vocational areas,” said Superintendent James L. O’Brien. “Sports are a positive way for students to build upon our district’s core values of passion, preparation, and perseverance and we are happy to support the program by receiving this grant.”
The GNB Voc-Tech team will kick off their 2020 Spring season with a home opener against Fairhaven High School on April 6, 2020 at Riley Field.
