Glass on Bike Path is Both Dsgusting and Dangerous

May 6, 2026 by Staff Writer

On Friday, April 25, 2026, I went for my early morning walk which brings me to the dock on the bike trail in Fairhaven. It’s wonderfully refreshing to watch the sun rise from there. Or just sit and relax and watch the marsh and bay and listen to the birds.

Unfortunately, as I approached the dock I noticed broken glass on the sidewalk. A glass bottle had been smashed. There were pieces on the sidewalk as well as in the grass. As I continued walking I realized there were at least 3-4 glass bottles that had been smashed, as well as cannabis paraphernalia lying in the grass, vape cartridges and joint plastic containers. Someone had a good ol time partying there. The glass was everywhere, including all over the dock, as well as four nip bottles thrown on the side of the dock.

I was pretty angry at seeing this misuse of nature’s beauty. It not only spoils it for all of us, the glass can also cut dogs’ and rabbits’ paws and result in flats of bicycle tires. If we all do not work at keeping this place beautiful and clean, and picking up after ourselves, then soon we will be living in a trash heap and no longer will want to even go down that way. This world is already so full of trash that we must all work together to keep it clean.

I went back home pretty disgusted and depressed. The fact that young people would seek out such a beautiful place, and then leave it so abused really bothered me. I grabbed some gloves, a dustpan and small broom and a trash bag and headed back to the area. I began sweeping up all the glass I could. It took me nearly 40 minutes to get most of it. Though there is still some in the grass that I was unable to get.

Whoever you are that partied and then intentionally smashed glass all over the place, please STOP AND THINK OF WHAT YOU ARE DOING! AND HOW MANY PEOPLE AND ANIMALS YOU ARE AFFECTING!! PLEASE BE KIND. If you wish to continue this behavior then go party at the DUMP or in your own basement where you will be more comfortable!

Maybe the Police need to survey this area on weekend evenings!
