The VFW hall in Fairhaven was full of people and excitement on 10/27/24 to show support and raise funds for Commander Jeff Cardoza, who suffered a stroke last May.
Mr. Cardoza also had a series of complications throughout the summer, slowing his recovery, but he was at the event, looking good and socializing with everyone.
According to his wife, Bonnie, he only has Medicare, and, unfortunately, it was not possible for his surgeries and some of his treatments to be done at the VA, so they are facing some pretty hefty medical bills. Mr. Cardoza also needs some medical equipment that is not covered by insurance.
A self-employed contractor, Mr. Cardoza has not been able to work since May.
The event included a suggested donation, lots of raffles, entertainment, and a large buffet of food and desserts.
“I’m happy with the turnout,” said Bonnie. “A lot of food was donated, and a lot of prizes. It’s good to see this many people care about Jeff and our community.”
Richie Wotton and Mr. Cardoza grew up together.
“All the fun we had growing up on the Neck,” said Mr. Wotton.
He said he was happy to see such a good turnout for Jeff, who has been organzing similar events to help people for years.
“Now, we’re supporting him,” said Mr. Wotton.
“I’m just happy that he’s here,” said Mr. Cardoza’s daughter, Cathy. “That’s all I can say.”
Anyone who would still like to contribute, may drop off a check at the VFW, 109 Middle St., Fairhaven.
