Well, this is it. The big graduation issue. The seniors have graduated and are on their way to the next phase of their lives.
It was different this year. But it was still lots of fun. The kids are jumping for joy (literally, see the cover); the parents are crying, and lots of people are there to cheer them on….oh, wait, that sounds like a pretty traditional commencement ceremony, huh?
Well, it was different, but some things just don’t change, right?
They didn’t get to walk across the field, but, then again, on rainy days the ceremony takes place in the squeezatorium anyway.
I meant to come up with some brilliance for this space this week, but the extra large issue (40 pages!) just ate away all my time. So, here I am at the last minute again.
I will say this, so that you may benefit from my 63 years of experience living a life that is not exactly traditional. Live your best life. Be true to yourself. Find a world view that fits in with your values and live your life accordingly. Stick with your principles, but don’t be cruel. It’s okay to make fun, but only if you can take a joke, too.
Go out into the world, little grasshoppers. Make us proud.
Our special issue for the seniors also includes the speeches…er…written remarks by the superintendent, principal, valedictorian, salutatorian, and a pretty good send-off in writing, to the two retiring teachers.
And, we even we have other news this week. We aren’t ignoring ALL of it. We have meeting coverage and a couple of other gems in here…got that recipe in, yup, I did.
We have elections in Fairhaven on Monday (see page 4), COVID update (okay, it’s tiny) on page 37; and we even managed to get a picture in of our police department kneeling with protesters.
Yes, it’s that kind of year that these kids are graduating in. But, y’know what? They’ll be okay. They’ll be better than okay.
They know how to navigate this stuff better than many of us.
Until next week then, to steal from Mr. Kulak: carpe diem,
ad astra
