This week it’s OMG, how did I do THAT time.
Geesh. I made the dumbest trio of mistakes in the story on the John Cooke lecture in last week’s issue (see page 3).
Now, mistakes happen, and there are lots of reasons for them. I maybe didn’t hear something right, missed a word that changed the gist of what someone said. Sometimes, it’s just the rush to make deadline and I miss a word or two that can change the meaning of a sentence.
But last week’s error, one in particular, is very embarrassing. I know, and have known, that Chris Richard has never disputed that the site of the John Cooke Memorial Park was once a burial ground. I have to guess that the introduction of the photo muddled my brain. But I should’ve called him. When he contacted me to say I made that mistake, honestly, I couldn’t believe it. I re-read that portion of the article and sat staring at the screen, positively mortified.
I apologized, of course, and he was pretty upset at first, but was gracious in understanding that mistakes happen. Anyway, see page 3 for the corrections to that article. I decided it warranted more than just a line or two in the corrections box.
Alas, the old brain just ain’t what it used to be.
We have some new brass in Fairhaven. Our police department has been reconfigured, and some long-time sergeants have been promoted. I know all of these guys, of course. That’s the nature of having a little paper like this in a small town. I think they’re good guys, so I’m happy for them.
The Selectboard also had a fun meeting. The Town Clerk Study Committee made its recommendation, and recommended that the position change from elected to appointed. See page 4 and decide for yourself. I might weigh in on this one later on, after the board makes its recommendations. Board members decided to hold off on that vote. See page 4 to find out why (don’t you hate that).
And lastly, be sure to get out and VOTE on Monday. We have two contested races this year (see page 21). TWO! Wow. I know, I know, but it’s better than Acushnet They don’t have any (see page 16).
And finally (which is decidedly different than “lastly”), please be sure to tell our advertisers you saw their ads in the Neighb News. Until next week then…see ya
