First order of business: next week, 6/29, will be our last issue for a couple of weeks. We will not publish on 7/6 & 7/13. We’ll be back on the 20th, unless I find diamonds in a scup…or something.
This weekend is big doings in these parts: Homecoming Day Fair, the BBC Swim, Blessing of the Bikes. And that’s just some of it. See the Happenings pages on 5, 6 & 7 for more.
So, the North Fairhaven Improvement Association had a meeting and invited the Select Board chair to join them to talk about the proposals from MassDOT on Benoit Square (see page 3).
I think Mr. Correy, who ran on the premise that he is not a poltiician, might want to learn a little about becoming a poltician. (Well, you ran for office and won, so that makes you a…politician.) Our Select Board members should be advocates for the town, and that means the residents. They should not dismiss the concerns of residents and say there’s nothing anyone can do.
Nothing has ever been accomplished by people who give up before they even try. (I’m sure I’m not the first person to say that.)
North Fairhaven residents often tell me that they feel as though they do not get the same respect as other parts of town. This baloney proposal about how to handle Benoit Square is a perfect example of WHY they feel that way.
There has to be a better way. There is a better way. Just look at what New Bedord did on Mt. Pleasant Street/Hathaway Road. That could work for Benoit Square. It will take money, and some creativity to work out some kinks (like an access road or easement for the NFIA driveway), but it can be done. And that’s just one idea. There are others, of course, that would work better than painting lines on a death-trap of a road.
Clearly, the neighbors will have to take matters into their own hands.
But, alas, I suspect that’s the only way anything worthwhile has ever gotten done.
Anyway, read the story. Decide for yourself.
Until next week then…see ya,
Glory to Ukraine!
Glory to the Heroes!
