The annual Post Office food drive is this Saturday (see page 3). This is the biggest of them all, Folks. So remember to leave a few nonperishable food items in or near your mailbox.
Fairhaven’s annual Town Meeting happened (see page 13). If you’re looking for some entertainment, find it online (www.fairhaventv.com), break out the popcorn, forward to the Planning Board stuff, sit back, and enjoy the show. So many more people spoke than what I had room to report on, some so eloquently, some so colorfully, some so humorously. I wish I had more space to capture the glory of it all (I LOVE Town Meeting). But, alas, I only had what I had. I even had to bump the quotable quotes. Sorry about that.
Thanks to the wisdom of Town Meeting, the worst of the Planning Board’s proposed bylaw changes did not pass. Never underestimate Town Meeting! They paid attention and made their decision.
Really, though, the PB chair was arguing one thing, the written documents seemed to say something else, and…sure enough, town counsel agreed with the TM members. That did not inspire confidence. I also am not sure I was able to get across the scolding tone some PB members used. I just didn’t have room for the extraneous stuff. But, a bit of advice: don’t scold the people whose butts you should be kissing. They know their role. They know their power. And your attitude, coupled with your incompetence, doomed you to failure.
My favorite was Mr. Carr saying the “white tops” in the room were voting against their own interests. Maybe they were, and that should tell you something. Like, maybe they could see it was bad for the town and they didn’t just put their own, personal interests ahead of the town’s best interests. That’s what public service is, Mr. Carr. Take note. Learn something. Not everyone is in it to get revenge for some old slights, or to give their own businesses a boost.
Long Live Town Meeting!!
On a much less exciting note, Acushnet has no contested races this year in their annual election (see page 3). That’s terrible. Just…terrible. This is how democracy dies. Honestly, it’s not your stupid gas prices, it’s lack of participation.
On another note, sort of related, we have three people vying for the state rep seat that Bill Straus is retiring from. See page 4 to find out who from Fairhaven is running.
And, let’s not forget that the Cherry Blossom Festival was this weekend, too. See page 12 for that.
There’s other stuff in here, of course. While you’re looking, be sure to notice who our advertisers are so you can tell them you saw their ads in the Neighb News. And if you go to a place that does not advertise with us, make a suggestion. If they know their patrons read the Neighb News, it might be just the extra push they need to support the Little Paper with a Big Voice. And, by the way, that “big voice” part is you, my readers. Thank you so much for reading the Neighb News. Together, we make a difference. We really do.
Until next week then, see ya,
Glory to Ukraine!
Glory to the Heroes!
