Marsh Island, located at the site of a former quarry and, later, filled in with dredged sand from the harbor, came to be known by locals as “Tin Can Island” for its reputation as a party spot and for the litter that accumulated there.
After a massive cleanup two weeks ago, in which tons of trash were collected—from plastics to Styrofoam to cans of assorted metals—the Buzzards Bay Coalition wishes to attract some tin cans back to the site in a different way.
The BBC will be collecting all non-perishable food items—not just tin cans—from those visiting Marsh Island through December. Tubs will be located near the trailhead and items will be picked up frequently. Items will be donated to the First Congregational Church in Fairhaven, which has an emergency food pantry.
On October 28, the Buzzards Bay Coalition and its partners opened up this much-loved piece of New Bedford Harbor waterfront to the public to enjoy the paths and great views of the refurbished marsh. The site features a perimeter trail, scenic overlooks, and all new signage.
