Fairhaven’s bid to change the Select Board from three to five members is very close to being a done deal. The Mass. Senate and House have both passed the legislation necessary to make it happen. On 10/21/21, the Senate passed the bill, according to a statement by Sen. Mark Montigny’s office.
Town Meeting voted in June to make the change. Both chambers of the state legislature then had to pass the bill, and the governor needs to sign it.
“We’re very happy to get this bill through the Senate in less than four days,” said Senator Montigny. “This immediate action ensures that we remain on track to carry out this historic change in time for the next election.”
According to Rep. William Straus’s office, the bill is now with the governor for his signature.
“I am pleased with the House and Senate final passage today of the bill to expand the Fairhaven select board from three to five members,” said Rep. Straus in a statement. “This was initiated at the local level by Town Meeting and I was happy to expedite the necessary state approval.”
Under the terms of the bill, three members will be elected at the first annual town election following the effective date of the legislation. The candidate receiving the highest number of votes shall serve a three-year term. The candidate receiving the second highest number of votes shall serve a two-year term, and the candidate receiving the third highest number of cotes shall serve a one-year term. After this initial election, successors shall be elected for terms of three years, ensuring staggered seats on the board.
