Press Release
At about 6:30 a.m., on Thursday, 2/8/24, the Fairhaven Fire Department responded to a report of a fishing vessel fire at 4 Washington Street in Fairhaven, formally known as Blue Harvest Fisheries.
Engine 2, Engine 4, Ladder 1 initially responded. Upon arrival, heavy fire was coming from the pilot house on the 82 foot fishing vessel. Fire suppression on the F/V Carrabassett began initially with the use of water and then changed to environmentally compatible foam.
Personnel operated for approximately one hour before the fire was considered under control. It was determined that welders were inside the bow of the fishing vessel utilizing a cutting torch and attempted to use a fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire with no success. Mutual aid companies from New Bedford and Mattapoisett fire departments responded to the scene and Acushnet Fire Department provided station coverage.
The owner of the fishing vessel was present and stated that the vessel had recently been retired from service. Mitigation of environmental issues in the harbor were managed by the Fairhaven Harbor Master, MA DEP, and USCG.
No injuries are being reported at this time. Estimated Damage: Appears to be a total loss
