First “adaptive fish derby reels in some interesting catches

June 26, 2024 by Staff Writer

The Fairhaven Recreation Department teamed up with the Department of Marine Fisheries to host an adaptive fish derby at Hoppy’s Landing on 6/21/24. A wheelchair mat to the shore and a wheelchair that is easy to push on sand were just some of the things available to make it easier for people who needed a little extra help.

DMF and Rec Center personnel, along with Marine Resources, were on hand to help fishers with their poles, baiting, etc. The poles and bait were donated for use by Bounty Hunters.

About 30 people participated throughout the day. The weather was pretty good, with beautiful skies, warm temperatures and a cool breeze. The rain started just as they were packing up for the day.

In the end, Kenny Burr won for biggest fish with a 27-inch eel; Izabella got second with an 11-inch flounder; Alex Comeau third with a 9 inch fish; Amara won for catching the most fish; Austin came in second for the most fish; and Jahdin won for the most interesting catch, a puffer fish.
