On Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at 8:58 p.m., the Fairhaven Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 31 Point Street. The first crew arrived to find an exterior fire that extended into the attic of the two-story residence. The fire was contained to the exterior and a portion of the attic area. The fire was declared under control at 9:15 p.m. Firefighters remained on the scene performing overall operations and cleared the location at 11:33 p.m.
No civilians or firefighters were injured, and the family was alerted to the fire by the smell of plastic burning. The family was able to evacuate the residence safely.
The fire started after occupants discarded embers from a small campfire near a vinyl fence and the structure. The discarded wood embers ignited the exterior vinyl siding and fence and traveled along the side of the house and entered the attic area.
The damage to the structure is estimated to be between $10-$20 thousand.
Mutual aid was received by the Mattapoisett Fire Department, and Acushnet Fire Department provided station coverage during the incident.
Acushnet Fire Department and Mattapoisett Police provided EMS mutual aid to a motor vehicle accident that occurred during the fire.
