Students at Fairhaven High School had a list of topics for their civics project. Students Lyla Brun, Alena Bendiksen, Rory Bradshaw, and Brianna Correy, chose the story of Manjiro Nakahama after visiting the Whitfield-Manjiro Friendship House and Museum in Fairhaven.
“Their research focused on the historical rescue of Manjiro by Captain Whitfield in the mid-1800s including a tour of Capt. Whitfield’s home and speaking with members of the Whitfield Manjiro Friendship Society,” wrote Debra Hanson Almeida, Educational Coordinator/Whitfield-Manjiro Museum. “This initiative was particularly inspired by the recent visit of students from Shimizu High School last Fall, further strengthening the Fairhaven-Tosashimizu Sister City ties.”
The display is in the foyer of FHS and will remain for an extended period, making it accessible for public viewing during tours of the high school.
“A notable element of their exhibit is a cascade of beautifully crafted origami cranes, symbolizing peace and friendship,” wrote Ms. Almeida.
