Press Release
The Fairhaven High School Math Team finished the 2018 season as the Southeastern Mass. Conference Mathematics League South Division Champions for the second straight year. The team was led by senior captains Matt Mitchell, Tony Truong and Jack Brown, as well as senior teammates Aaron Almeida, Julia Cabral, Kathryn Kenney, and Will Elliott. Strong contributions came from juniors Grace Davignon, Mira Yin, Isabella Furey, Reagan Dasneves, Elyse Rebelo, Nicholas Brown, and Phoebe Antonio. Also, key scoring from sophomores Jenna Correia, Christina Eckenreiter, Matt Elliott and Sean Brown was instrumental in several victories.
This group of seniors has had the most success of any class in school history. Not only were they the heart of the team during the consecutive South Division titles, they also led the team in scoring during the school’s first overall SMCML League Championship season in 2017. Their leadership, work ethic and enthusiasm were exceptional. All of the seniors’ accomplishments were celebrated at an end of the year awards breakfast.
The team looks to be in good shape for next season as a strong group of juniors and sophomores returns looking to defend the title.
According to the team’s coaches, Mr. Harding and Mr. Francis, these current underclassmen enjoy the competition and are eager for practice to begin next fall.
Mr. Francis commented, “We will miss these seniors, especially Matt Mitchell who was one of the best scorers in FHS Math Team history, but our team now expects to win and they’re willing to work for it,” said Mr. Franics. “We’re quite confident, because while our team members are the nicest kids you’ll ever meet, every one of them is exceptionally intelligent and very determined when it comes to math competition. You do not want to be sitting across from them! We’re on to 19.”
The SMCML includes 16 high schools in SE Mass.
It is “very competitive, and high-level math,” said Mr. Harding.
