A fast moving storm tore through the area on Tuesday and brought a tornado that touched down in Mattapoisett and one that touched town in Barnstable. The state averages two tornados a year; this year we have had three. New Bedford got 1.87” of rain in just a few minutes. The northern part of the state got much more with Lawrence getting 6”.
In a press release on the Mattapoisett website the town confirmed severe weather at 11:45 a.m. in the areas of Tinkham Lane, Acushnet Road and North Street. News outlets confirmed with the National Weather Service that a tornado touched down for about three minutes. The town wrote that the water treatment plant sustained some damage but was still operational. Fairhaven gets its water from the plant in Mattapoisett, but no disruptions were reported by press time.
